Call for Applications for Pre-selection Round of AXA Research Fund Post-Doctoral Grants

Hokkaido University (HU) has been participating in the 2012 Post-Doctoral grants (second wave) program administered by AXA Research Fund (ARF). The HU Office for Research Strategy, therefore, calls for applications from candidates willing to conduct research at HU as Post-Doctoral Research Fellows. The Office plans to select two candidates from among the qualified applicants, and recommend them to ARF by September 13, 2012. Each selected candidate should then prepare a detailed proposal and submit an application online for final selection by October 4, 2012 directly to the ARF Office.

Candidates interested in the Post-Doctoral Fellowship are invited to submit applications for pre-selection round with due consideration of the details given below.

  1. Host institution for Post-Doctoral Fellowship:
    Hokkaido University
  2. Eligible fields:
    Candidates from any of the 12 fields proposed by ARF: Biology & Biochemistry; Biology & Genetics; Economics & Business; Environment/Ecology; Geosciences; Immunology; Mathematics; Microbiology; Neuroscience & Behavior; Plant & Animal Science; Psychiatry/Psychology; and Social Sciences, General are eligible. However, the Post-Doctoral research proposal must fall within the scope of one of the three risks: life risks, socio-economic risks, or environmental risks. Proposal for research that is clinical-oriented or related to commercial exploitation is not accepted.
  3. Duration of Post-Doctoral Fellowship
    Two years (In principle, from April 1, 2013 to March 30, 2015). Only candidates who passed the pre-selection round administered by HU as well as the final selection by ARF will be eligible for the fellowship.
  4. Salary/Fellowship etc.:
    Each candidate selected by ARF will be paid a minimum gross salary equivalent to 35,000 Euro per year as per ARF regulations or as determined by the HU regulations. Each candidate can apply for a limited fund additionally to ARF to cover research-related costs.
  5. Requirements for applications:
    The applicant may be either (i) a recipient of a doctorate (PhD, Dr. Sc. or an equivalent degree), or (ii) a graduate student who will complete the doctoral course with a doctorate by March, 2013. He/she must have adequate research experience in the proposed field of research demonstrated by past research performance (publications etc.). In case of equal competence, recent doctorates (those who have obtained degree not more than 5 years ago) with mobility (those who received doctorate at institution other than Hokkaido University and preferably abroad) will be given priority during selection. Applications from candidates already registered in an existing Post-Doctoral Program of Hokkaido University will not be accepted.
  6. Application documents
    (i) A research proposal related to one of the risk-related themes (see 2. Above) (2 sheets of A4 size, in English);
    (ii) Record of past research activities including a list of peer-reviewed journal articles (in English);
    (iii) A recommendation letter from the proposed host supervisor at Hokkaido University (in English or Japanese);
    (iv) Brief biographic data with clearly written name (family name, first name), postal and e-mail addresses and telephone no. for correspondence (in English).
    (v) A copy of doctoral certificate (and mark-sheet as applicable) or a proof of current graduate studentship with statement of the current doctor course supervisor about the likelihood of completion of the doctorate by March, 2013 (in English or Japanese).
  7. Address for application submission:
    Fifteen (15) copies of application (complete with the above-mentioned documents) must be sent by post (regular or the internal post of HU) to reach the following address on or before August 24, 2012. Please, mark the envelope with “Application for AXA Research Fund Pre-selection” in red color.
