Our laboratory develops and applies optical manipulation techniques targeting life phenomena.
With use of light, the timing and site to induce a reaction can be easily manipulated. Photocurable resin-based 3D printers are good examples indicating usability of light. By utilizing the technique for life manipulation, we have developed a new technology to turn gene switches on and off exclusively in optically irradiated sites. Gene switching underlies all life phenomena and our technique to artificially manipulate the switching can be applied to all kinds of life sciences including developmental biology, neuroscience, and regenerative medicine. Our ultimate goal is to integrate our optical life manipulation techniques and existing optogenetics to manipulate life solely by optical means.
