Introduction

"Hokkaido University Leader Development System in the Basic Interdisciplinary Research Areas" is a system adopted as a part of program to improve job environment for young researchers supported by the 2007 special coordination funds for promoting science and technology of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.

In the outline of the 2nd Mid-term Targets and Plans, Hokkaido University has set up a target of "Establishment of a world-class human development system."

To develop a tenure-track system, a tenure-track status (five-years) with the possibility of converting into a tenure position in the future will be given to young researchers in basic interdisciplinary research areas who have internationally high levels of achievements and have a demonstrated potential to become a research and education leader. An independent research environment and an experience-oriented young leader training program will be provided to foster future leaders in basic interdisciplinary research areas.
